Alliant Techsystems Inc. has received an order worth at least $213 million under a contract from the U.S. Army Contracting Command in Rock Island, Ill.
The order is for a mix of 5.56-millimeter, 7.62-millimeter and .50-caliber ammunition. It will be produced by Alliant Techsytems’ (NYSE: ATK) ATK Small Caliber Systems division at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, which employs about 2,750 people.
The $213 million order is an addition to an existing indefinite-delivery and indefinite-quantity contract with the plant that lasts until 2012. The government uses this type of contract when it doesn’t know how much product it will need during a certain period of time.
Since ATK began managing the Lake City Plant for the Army in 2000, it has produced more than 10 billion rounds of ammunition.
